Arbenting

For years I’ve been kind of a productivity junkie. I’ve tried dozens of different techniques and apps, some with good short term effects but none that offered any long term use. But for the past few months I’ve been using the iPhone app Epic Win with great success.

EpicWin is an an iPhone app that combines a to-do list with a streamlined RPG, so you’re rewarded for completing your real-world tasks with XP, loot and levelling-up.

I’m a big gamer and my favorite genre by far are RPGs (Role Playing Games). Epic Win seeks to boost your productivity by turning your life into an RPG. I went into it with the notion that it would be just like every other productivity app I’ve tried in the past. I would use it enthusiastically for a while, then the novelty would wear off. But for an RPG addict like me, this is the perfect productivity app. I want to complete tasks and level up my avatar.

As an example, take the daily medications that I always used to have trouble remembering. By adding “Take Meds” as a repeating daily task, I’m on top of it and take my meds every day to get my 50 points of strength. Adding the gaming aspect makes the app a real motivator.
