Freelance Advice Fridays! 12/11/09

Here on Arbenting Freebies, we wanted to start doing a bit more of a public service kind of outreach, so we decided that on Fridays, from time to time, we would drop in with five quick tips that we have learned from our time in the freelance design/development and writing arenas. So this is our first attempt at sharing some pointers that work for us, in hopes that they may also work for some of you.

Five Freelance Quick-Tips

Focus on the flow of your design!

Designs speak to the observer and guide them along through the different elements of the work with a particular flow that is established through the layout. Guide them well!

Write from your passion, and others will respond!

If you want to be sure that your words and posts resonate with others, then you have to be sure that you are pulling those words from a place of passion. Hook them with a feeling!

Freelancing is not a job, it is a way of life!

One thing that most freelancers can agree on, is that this is so much more than a career path, it is actually a whole lifestyle that you must dive into. Learn it, live it, love it!

Be accessible to your clients!

In order to make this freelancing gig work for you, you have to be sure that your clients feel like you are listening and understanding where they are coming from. It is not all about you!

Remember the contract!

We have to remember that using a contract is not just about being able to back it up in court if necessary, but more about outlining the roles and expectations of the project. Professionalism and protection!

Nice collection of posts Robert. Thanks for including one of mine among them. A few I’ve already read, but there are some new ones to keep me busy.

Thank you for the tips, I love the words which say ‘write from your passion and others will respond!’ and also ‘Freelancing is not a job, it is a way of life!’. Sometimes I write something according to what people like, so writing feels so hard and not fun. And make freelancing as way of life is a fun way to do this activity, because when I think that freelancing is a job, it will become a burden for me, I don’t want to live with that way.
